Album Notes
The critics speak on The Breetles' WRITERSCRAMP:

"...one record you'll never forget. ... wildly imaginative and decidedly quirky " - Ken Sharp, FRIDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK May 2000 THE ROCK REPORT

"...an artist whose timeless influences he has equaled, if not surpassed." - Roy Abrams, The INSIDE CONNECTION April 2000

"...a delightful record, full of benevolent eccentricities that you'll never tire of." - David Bash, DISCOVERIES

"....as solid and charming a full length recording as has been released thus far in 2000." - Rick Schadlebauer, AMPLIFIER #18

"...odd, witty, at times brilliant melodic punk/pop...." - Peter Spencer, The STAR-LEDGER 4/16/00

"... breezy melodies, billowy harmonies and extravagant orchestrations.... one of the more robust and refreshing albums in recent memory." - Lee Zimmerman, GOLDMINE 4/21/00

"...a true pop music genius....." - Paul Anderson, ENTERTAINMENT TODAY/ & CONSUMABLE

"Easily one of the best pop CDs thus far released this year. This is a giant blast of sincere and pleasing melodies and superb arrangements." - bABYsUE Magazine

"a fantastic album that won't cramp your style." - K.Y., HITS

" 'Their Day' is still as perfect a song as I know: melody, harmony, mystery, pathos, dynamics, groove...for this song alone you should be immortal..." - Lane Steinberg (NOEL COWARD'S GHOST)

"...music that challenges definition at every turn... prepare yourself for a remarkable discovery. " - Claudio Sossi SHAKE IT UP!

The Breetles are basically New Jersey native Chris Breetveld, who's occasionally helped out by various pals--DIY auteur R. Stevie Moore takes co-lead vocals on the opening track, "I Don't Live Here"--but who recorded most of the terrific WRITERSCRAMP on his own. Breetveld takes most of his inspiration from the group who inspired his band name, along with the Who and the Kinks, and the soaring "My Sense of Wonder" pays direct lyrical tribute to all three.

However, Breetveld's not a mere revivalist, in the manner of Myracle Brah; his British Invasion-derived melodies are laced with oddball lyrical concepts--"Please Send Boat" is a daffy, surreal tune about a flood--cool weird noises and a playful, try anything once attitude. WRITERSCRAMP may not be for everyone, but it's an interesting, unique take on power pop conventions.

about

The Breetles Princeton, New Jersey

The Breetles, an American power-pop band, are Chris Breetveld and anyone who plays Breetles songs, with or without him. They became one of the founding rocks of the "Kendall Park (New Jersey) Sound" starting around 1982. They have been described as the illegitimate flower-child of The Who, The Beatles, XTC, The Kinks, Mrs. Miller and Cheap Trick. Power-pop, cleverly-stupid, quiet is the new loud. ... more
